She is now at Singapre. Next year will back to her new home in England.

Some people reminded me that I seldom upload picture to my blog. They were curious whether I stop crafting jewellery or ????

NO!!!! Still busy and almost non-stop. The problem is I do not have a 'permenant' camera, card reader,.... etc. Really no mood.

Now, I changed a new mobile phone which I can upload my lastest works as and when I like with WIFI connection. Thanks to new technology.

Yes, I had ventured into my new products which is Artistic Lamps. Title : "Let is be light. Gen. 1:3"

I weaved things that I found and I made friends that I met.

A family walked in my studio 2 years ago. They told me they were from Kinmen, Taiwan and they operated Homestay. We had no plan to Taiwan then. We made friend and exchanged namecard.

End of last year, my wife suggested to bring our daughter to Taiwan as her birthday gift. We intended to Taiwan, then to Xiemen, China. We discovered that Kinmen are in between the two.

I remembered them. And decided to visit and stay with them. They were so warm and gave us superb hospitality. Until now, we still 'help' them to promote Kinmen to people that we know.

The above pendants were what I made for them during our stay. I found the glass, seashell and stones at the seaside near their homestay. They were happy.

Agatized Fossil Coral

AGATIZED FOSSIL CORAL is a natural stone that is formed when ancient coral is gradually replaced with agate. It should not be mistaken for protected and endangered coral reef from the modern oceans of today.

Corals may vary widely within a single stone depending on weathering and oxidation and the original mineral content.

In Indonesia, entire coral heads are often completely preserved and appear just as they did 20 million years ago, although their density is much changed by replacement with silica, iron, manganese and other minerals. There are fern corals, brain corals, hex corals, honeycomb corals and many more.

Fossil coral pieces are sought by gemstone and fossil collectors around the world. as well as being used in beads and other jewelry. Since agate is fairly hard (7 on the Mohs scale) and very durable, fossil coral is suitable for all kinds of jewellery.

This is another piece of my works. It took me 2 days to complete. Really complicated-ya. Anyway, the joy of completion is much greater!!!

I am using few sizes copper wire to wrap a Lapis Lazuli. This is an elegant pendant. SOLD.

Happy Happy Series - Pandants I found another style of mine. This shall be my favourite for some times. It really make me happy and impress others. So, I shall called them "Happy Happy Series."

I like copper wire especially elegant works which involve much different size and colour of wire and different techniques. I am still learning to master this style. Shall have more better works soon.

In memoriam of Blue and White - Cuff

Underglazed cobalt decorated wares (Blue and White Porcelain) were known since Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618 – 906) in China. However, it was well developed by the middle of the 14^th Century.

Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia

Melaka was founded in 1396 by a Sumatran Prince, Parameswara, who adopted the name Sultan Iskandar Shah.

The Portuguese conquered Melaka in 1511, ruling it for 130 years.

The Dutch wrested it from the Portuguese in 1641 and ruled it until 1824. The British succeeded in 1824. The British was temporarily suspended by the Japanese during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Upon Japan’s surrender, the British returned but on 31^st August 1957, Melaka under ‘Malaya’ was declared Independent Malaysia – Merdeka!

Melaka, due to its strategic location, was convenient for it to be a receiving and redistribution centre for luxury goods and raw commodities from Eastern and Western Countries. Thus, it was the busiest commercial waterway of South East Asia from the 15^th Century.

Blue and White Porcelain shards were discovered during Melaka River Beautifying Project spanned the entire Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) periods.

To own a piece of Blue and White Porcelain Jewellery is like having an antique with great value and at the same time it can be a stunning fashionable accessory. ~ Joe's Design 2010

A friend of us whom has a daughter who is reaching her 21st Birthday on coming 30th May had customed made a special pendant from me. Her mother told me that her favorite is butterfly. Therefore, I am using again, my medium - copper wire to create a special and one of the kind jewellery for her. I am using different colour 4mm beads and wire to create it. Here is the creation. This piece of jewellery had reached the Birthday Girl hands today. Again, happy birthday and God bless.

Bling-Bling Fair 2009

We had participated in the above Fair in November at MITC, Melaka and Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur from 10-13 December 2009.

The Slogan of the Fair is "By Malaysians For The World." Since, we, Calanthe Art Cafe & Joe's Design - Artisan Handcrafted Jewellery are totally and absolutely By Malaysians For The World, thus, we had been invited to participate.

For Exhibition in Melaka, the respond was not that encouraged due to the location and crowd of public. However, in Mid Valley Exhibition Hall, there were many people around. I was told by the Organiser that there were 15000 people visited the Fair just on last Saturday, 12 Dec. Therefore, we had really good publicity and marketing about products. I had a interesting thought, we just like animals (Exhibitors) in different case (Booth) in a Zoo (The Fair). Everyday, people come to 'see' us just like they go to Zoo. More interesting was, we feed them instead! Ha! Ha!

Although it was real tiring, but it was one part of our journey to make our dream come through. God Bless Calanthe and Joe's Design....

Travelling...

September 2009 have been a busy month travelling for my wife and myself.

2nd to 4th Sept - Bali

8th to 10th Sept - Singapore

14th to 18th Sept - China

29th to 30th Sept - Kuala Lumpur???

A total of 11 days of this month were used to travel to three countries. Each country has many different things, ie. culture, language, foods, style of living....

As a lecturer from University of Malaya told me, "Monkey also knows how to walk and see!", it reminds me always to crystalize on new things that I see, how to learn from them, how to improve our present situation, enrich our live.... But more important to me know is, how to improve our business.

Of course, we were on business trip. Thanks God that my wife is in Interior Designing and her job function required her to travel! The best part of it is I can "tumpang" (follow without paying much).

First, Bali trip. I am quite familiar with Bali. I visited many time (10+) in 5 years. I knew what to get and what to expect from there. This trip, the most interesting was, we brought our baby girl there. We were really enjoyed.

Second, Singapore Trip. We were there for a friend's wedding. Besides that, nothing much, except seeing more taller buildings, more organise environment, more shopping complex (I think people there like shopping-kua!). Oh ya!, I saw some similar rings which we did also at City Hall, they are selling at SD18. Good news, we are selling at RM12.90. Maybe I should consider to increase the price!!! What says you?

Third, China Trip. First we went to Guangzhou. My wife headed to factories to ordered her stuff while I were scouting at the wholesale market for my jewellery raw materials. First time of my purchase till I need to send it back with shipping company. I am exciting to wait for the arrival of the stuff which I can produce many new works of my jewellery.

Then, we went to a Beijing. Not for the Great Wall, but for the Artists' Artworks. A local artist brought us to a place called "798". Wah! People who love art should visit there. You can find a totally paradigm shift about your perception about tradition China Paintings. I assure you!

Of course, I did study of the business there which were similar to my business, ie. Cafe and Jewellery, and I realize that there are plenty of rooms to improve for our business. We shall continue to upgrade in order to serve you better in coming future.

I was involved in the function from 29-30 August 2009 at Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall.

I sponsorred their jewellery and also was one of the judge for their final competition on 30 Aug.

The candidates were from Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Melaka. Total of 23 candidates took part in this event. Indeed, it was a wonderful and successful event.

Mother of Pearls and Shell Necklace

I like this colour combination. It remind me few years ago while I were in Europe during Autumn. Some leaves started to turn from green to yellow. Some leaves on floor were brown in colour.

That was the period that I 'transformed' myself to be a more 'artistic' person. I stayed twice in Europe, both trips about two months.

When I back from the first trip 2002, we started Calanthe Art Cafe in 2005 (http://calantheartcafe.blogspot.com/).

Second trip 2007, I upgrade my skill in Jewellery Making and seriously focus into our own brand - Joe's Design - Artisan Handcrafted Jewellery.

Crocheted Wire Necklace

A family from England came in to my studio last two days. They have two cute and nice looking sons who like my coloured beads very much. While they were playing with the beads, their mother tried many of my necklaces. Among all, they like this piece. BUT, she refused to buy even her husband wanted to buy for her. They left.

Yesterday, the husband came back alone, quickly and quietly, brought it. He told me that his wife like it very much and he would like to get it for her. He wanted me to wrapped it so that he would give his wife a surprise on her birthday in October. Such a lovely husband!

Butterflies and Flowers

Butterflies and Flowers are romantic combination.

In this necklace, I used coloured love shaped shell to do the flowers and special glass beads to form the beautiful butterflies.

The idea was came from my small baby who is now 1 years+ old. She can pronounce flower and recognise butterfly. I got two small butterfly toy for her.

New Master Piece

Since I had sold out two of my Master Pieces last weekend, I shall craft more new pieces. Besides my works are highly demanded, I felt such a great joy that I can produced something with my own hand and sell for a very fair price!

People who know me for long shall not believe that I can do them because I am suppose not a handy man. However, nothing is absoluted and all things can change. Again, the question is : "To be or not to be.....?"

Here is a long necklace with majority of the coloured shell beads with different shapes. Some I brought them in Thailand. The center of all the flowers are Blue Tiger Eye beads.

Then, I decided to use two different colour and shape beads to finish off the necklace. Look good, right?

Copper Crocheted Tube with Onyx Beads Necklace

Today is Monday, which is supposed our off day. However, due to yesterday was Singapore National Day and we had a busy weekend. Therefore, I decided to open my Jewellery Shop for half day.

An France Gentlemen came to brought a 'secret' gift for his girlfriend. Actually, her girlfriend had tried it yesterday. She looked good with that. However, she decided not to have it due to the label price.

These is the second Master piece that I shown in my Studio. I crocheted with 4mm 2 toned coloured copper wire and some Onyx beads inside the tube.

Praise God. I had sold my First and Second Master in last weekend. Shall upload the First Master Piece when I find it.

Again, from the ideas of my theme this year (Summer Breeze Series), I has came out with new designs for my very own Artisan Handcrafted Rings.

There are soooooo good. Elegance as well as gorgeous as many customers had commented. Moreover, they are adjustable to fix any fingers' size.

I used different beads with different shapes and colours to achieve my desired patterns.

I can't resist to make many pieces of them. Here are some completed works.

Faces Earrings

Recently my handcrafted earrings seemed received overwhelming respond by my customers. There were few customers came in just intended to buy EARRINGS. So, my sales not bad-lah.

However, I seldom focus into earrings. Therefore, they were not much choices in my studio. Anyway, as I promised you (ladies from America, Europe, Hong Kong, and Singapore), I shall focus on Earrings and upload more in my blog. Chochet Wire Necklace

Crochet is a process of creating fabric from yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The word is derived from the Middle French word croc or croche, meaning hook.

I learned Crochet by myself by referring to books. Due to my personality of always want to be different from others, I decided to use my favorite-wire with crochet technique. I had made few jewellery already. Highly praised by many.

Here is another piece of my creation. I used 0.4mm blue, green and red coated copper wires with green glass beads and red coral beads. Right now, it is the most special of my crochet work. So, what is your comments?

Bird Nest Earring

The topic of bird nest is very popular now. From Main Hall of Olympic in China until Bird Nest House in Melaka old houses especially after the declaration of Unesco World Heritage Status for Melaka, people have been talking about it.

Recently, I met an uncle whom I first met him as a shop keeper in Jonker Street Melaka in 2005. However, I did not meet him for sometimes already. He did not continue to do the antique business already. Due to curiosity, I asked him, what have you been doing lately? He replied was simple. First I feed the bird and now the bird feed me. Oh, bird nest business.

So, I decided to come out my Earring using the Bird Nest Theme also. Beside, is a earring of my creation.

It is using light Amethyst stone and the nest of course is my favorite, copper wire.

I like it very much. And also an Italian gentleman who had brought it back as a special jewellery 'Make In Melaka, Malaysia" for his wife. GRAZILL-ya. (Thank you in Italian word).

Coloured Shell Necklace.

Beside is a necklace from our Summer Breeze Theme - Cafe 4th Anniversary Celebration Theme.

It was made from coloured shell beads and blue Tiger Eye in the centre. I used dull colour scheme which was from grey to chocolate to orange and yellow (left) and grey to green to blue to yellow and orange (right).

Carnelian Flower and Agate Necklace

Here is another set of my creation. I am using Carnelian to form a big flower in the centre. Few leaves came out from the flower and many green agate and 6mm carnelian beads to form the necklace.

It had been displayed in my cupboard for sale. I managed to sell the earring yesterday to a lady from Netherlands.

She is thinking about the necklace, maybe will come back today to get it.

Chunky Necklace

Sometimes, it is difficult to do chunky necklace. Not only it is heavy, it also will take too much time in order to complete one piece. In term of economical point of view, it is not wealth while. However, I do believe that I am still learning and the more I try, the more I will get into the world of fashion.

For the above piece, I used many crystals. They were, Carnelian, Orange Aventurine, Green Aventurine, Moss Agate, Bloodstone, Tiger Eye, etc.

Many people like the piece and finally, it sold already.

If to be, then make it to be special and different!

Sometimes, my friends and relatives told me that there are too many jewellery in market. Even recently, an uncle who from Europe (He made jewellery and sold last time) told me that it is easier and faster to buy and sell jewellery than making our own. However, I still believe besides I can create my own brand, I also enjoy in the process of exploring new techniques in handcrafted jewellery.

This was a piece that I completed at about evening yesterday. I used Turquoise and coral beads with silver plated copper wire.
